New York Times

By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr.
Published: February 1, 2012

Don Cornelius, the producer and television host who created the dance show “Soul Train,” was found shot dead in his Los Angeles home early Wednesday morning in what appears to be a suicide, the Los Angeles Police Department and the county coroner’s office said. He was 75 years old.

A person called the police from Mr. Cornelius’s house on Mulholland Drive in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood just before 4 a.m. and reported shots had been fired, a police spokesman, Chris No, said. When officers arrived, they were let into the house and found Mr. Cornelius lying lifeless on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to be self-inflicted, said the Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner, Ed Winter.

Mr. Cornelius was taken to Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:56 a.m., Mr. Winter said. “It was reported as a suicide, a self-inflicted wound,” he said. “I have investigators at the hospital.”

“Soul Train” was one of the longest-running syndicated shows in television history and played a critical role in spreading the music of black America to the world, offering wide exposure to musicians like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson in the 1970s and 1980s.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague and business partner Don Cornelius,” said Quincy Jones, according to the Associated Press. “Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business. Before MTV, there was ‘Soul Train.’ That will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius. His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched. My heart goes out to Don’s family and loved ones.”

Mr. Cornelius, a former disc jockey, created the show in 1970 in Chicago on WCIU-TV and served as its writer, producer and host. Quickly becoming a success, the show was broadcast nationally in 1971, beginning its 35-year run. Besides the performers, the program showcased young dancers who would strut their stuff, laying the groundwork for countless dance programs, including current hits like Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.” “We had a show that kids gravitated to,” Mr. Cornelius said.

In a 2010 interview with The Los Angeles Times, Mr. Cornelius said he was excited about a movie project he was developing about the show. “We’ve been in discussions with several people about getting a movie off the ground. It wouldn’t be the ‘Soul Train’ dance show. It would be more of a biographical look at the project,” he said. “It’s going to be about some of the things that really happened on the show.”

Mr. Cornelius stopped hosting the show in 1993, and “Soul Train” ceased production in 2006. Two years later, he sold the show to MadVision Entertainment.

The Malaco Music group is proud to announce the signing of Alexis Allen professionally known as “Lexi.”

Singing in her grandfather’s church since she was old enough to hold a microphone, Lexi has always understood that singing praises to God was what she was born to do

Lexi’s heart for singing led her to land a small stint as a background vocalist for the late Gerald LeVert, Fred Hammond, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, before realizing her own destiny to have a musical ministry of her own.

Lexi met and married Michael Allen, a music producer, who helped develop her writing and vocal skills to create her own unique sound. This joint effort brought three national recording projects to date on boxing champion Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal record label making them the first gospel music act to sign to label. Her most critically acclaimed project, “A Praise in The Valley,” garnered her a Stellar Award nomination.

Lexi’s world changed with Michael’s untimely death. Having their son, Lexi was, without her husband, without focus, without direction, but she wasn’t without God.

In early 2006 an opportunity presented itself in which Lexi became the “face” of the television channel, The Word Network. The birth of the “The Lexi Show”, a one on one style talk show, became Lexi’s new endeavor. The Lexi Show proved to be a groundbreaking success for the network. Some of Black Hollywood’s elite and gospel music A-List artists have shared intimate conversation with Lexi on screen. Lexi has been featured on the BET shows, "Lift Every Voice", and co-hosted “Bobby Jones Gospel”, which now runs in syndication on the BET Networks. Currently, she can be heard reporting the latest news on Radio One’s syndicated program “The Yolanda Adams Morning Show” every week.

D.A. Johnson, Executive Director – Gospel Division for the Malaco Music Group states, “I’ve witnessed Lexi”s music ministry from afar, during her early recording years. Since that time, she has overcome tremendous personal adversity and her maturation as an artists, a woman of God, a radio correspondent and television personality is just nothing short of amazing. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to present her music to the world. Fans of her television show will be pleasantly surprised when they are finally introduced to her music. I’m excited to see what God is going to do in this season of her life”

Lexi says, “I am humbled to be a family member of the iconic recording label Malaco Records. I am honored to have the opportunity of continuing in the legacy of great singers, musicians and music.”

Lexi’s debut Malaco CD, entitled “Phenomenal,” produced by Marcus Cole (of the famed Gospel group Commissioned) will be released Spring / Summer of 2012.

The fifth season of the Lexi Show currently airs every Saturday at noon (EST) on The Word Network.

**NEWS** 27TH ANNUAL STELLAR AWARDS TALENT LINE UP ANNOUNCED

By MaryAnn Tierney, Regional Administrator
FEMA Region III

2011 has been an important reminder to all of us that disasters strike anytime, anyplace. Regionally, we have felt those devastating effects first hand. As we recovery from 2011's disasters we prepare to continually protect our communities for future emergency events in 2012. Our goal is to empower all residents to become their own emergency manager through simple steps such as getting a kit, making a plan and staying informed.

Last summer our Region experienced disasters of significant proportion. The severe impact of Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee and the Mid-Atlantic earthquake thrust our recovery efforts into motion in record volume. However, each disaster was met head on by local, state, and federal partners ready to work together with the public's safety and best interest in our minds and hearts.

Ultimately this year proved that we all are vulnerable to these hazards, no matter where we live. And preparing for them at the last minute can often be too little, too late.

We all want the peace of mind of knowing that our families, our homes and our businesses are safe and protected from threats of any kind. While we can't control where or when the next flood, tornado, earthquake or other disaster will hit, we can take responsibility for preparing our loved ones and properties for emergencies.

So as we reflect on the past year and get ready for a new beginning, we're encouraging all Americans to do their part to be prepared by Resolving to be Ready for disasters in 2012. It's a New Year's resolution that is easy to keep - and could save your life.

First, make a family emergency communications plan with your family. How would you contact your child if their school was locked down? Where would you meet your family if cell phone towers were down? Simply take a moment to sit down with your family and come up with a communication plan to deal with these kinds of scenarios.

Second, build an emergency kit for your home, office, and car. What if the roads were so bad, that you had to stay in your office overnight? It would be helpful to have spare food, clothes, and medications at your office desk. In the New Year, treat yourself to a shopping trip dedicated to building a few emergency kits. You can find a list of suggested items on Ready.gov.

Third, stay informed of risks in your community. In this region in particular, we experience events such as floods, hurricanes, tropical storms and snow.

Additionally, recognizing that it takes the whole community to implement all- inclusive emergency management, kind acts such as checking in on friends and neighbors that might need extra assistance during disasters could make a world of difference.

So, if you haven't yet taken the steps to keep you and your family prepared for emergencies, please take some time this holiday season and resolve to be ready. Take the pledge or learn more information at www.ready.gov/pledge -- and encourage the rest of your community to join.
